"Festive Friends"

The holidays are truly a wonderful time of year - definitely one of my favorite times to celebrate and spend time with family and friends.  I am realizing that the holidays certainly bring out the sentimental side of me - and having special friends to spend our memorable moments with means so much.  I wanted to document what an important role our friends play in our lives so while we were at the Christmas tree farm last weekend I gathered us all together and asked a nice individual to snap some photo's of us! How happy was I when I saw how great the pictures turned out!  It isn't an award winning photo - certainly not the best composition - but that doesn't matter at all to me. What matters is that we have a photo of us all together, smiling, laughing, spending time together, being just us - nothing fancy, just friends hanging out. Years from now the memories that this photo will hold are worth a thousand times more than the second it took to snap.  I hope that during this holiday season you get a chance to spend some time with those you cherish and love as well. It truly is one of the magical parts of the season.

 

I had so much fun doing this layout (and no it wasn't because of the Christmas music I was singing along too!) I played a little bit with some paint and had fun with some paper curling just like I do when I wrap my Christmas gifts each year.  I am pretty much addicted to paper curling now - I love how it brings dimension and movement to projects and it is just so simple to do...I challenge you to try it on your next layout!

"There's No Place Like Home"

I don't know about you, but my favorite place to be for the holidays, is home with my family and close friends. With that thought in mind I decided to alter a paper mache house, for this month's assignment "There's no place like..... for the holidays". 

Because the house I used was kind of small, I attached it to a paper mache drum. 

The tiles on the roof are half circles that were layered in rows.



I used a die-cut journaling tag for the door mat.



I cut out two of the kids from the Joyride Crafting Strips sheet and adhered them to the side windows of the house.



Here's a side view.



In the back I used another journaling card, this time for the back door.  I applied patterned paper to the back of the chipboard trees and clouds, for a finished look.

"No, the GRINCH did not steal Christmas."

    I've been waiting to use this photo for almost a year now. Originally I had planned on this photo joining all of our Santa pictures from years past. Then we had a "Santa" who was a willing, but not very cooperative participant. See, last year about 10 days before Christmas, we had the largest snow storm I ever remember Portland having in the 40 years I have been here. School was closed for the entire week before Christmas break. As a mother of four, I sooooo.... needed those days. I wasn't done shopping or wrapping and we hadn't been to see Santa yet. Along with school being closed the entire city was pretty much shut down. So, my mom and I came up with a brilliant idea, or so we thought at the time. I was to buy a Santa hat and we would put it on my Step-dad and he would pose as Santa for a home photo shoot. However, two major things went wrong. First, I could only find a toddler size Santa hat at the limited stores that I had to chose from. Second, our Santa had no interest in smiling. This photo cracks me up. It made it to a layout, but I haven't been able to convince myself to add it to the frame with all of our other professional Santa portraits. The youngest in the photo is my niece...only four of those are mine!

   I chose to accent my page with an embossing folder from Cuttlebug. Love the way that those ornaments stand out on the pink polka dot paper.

"How To Get Candy"

One of the first thing that I noticed about the Joyride collection was the mix of papers that coordinated so well with Christmas themes but could also be used on non Christmas pages.  My first thought was to use those wonderful snowflakes on winter pages but then I wondered....could I use this line for photos that were taken in the summer? 

But more importantly, could I use this line for Penn State pictures?

Well this is what I came up with and I am thrilled to say that you can use this stuff with anything!

"Christmas Cupcakes"

It seems as though all across the country it has been very, very cold.  Although it's below zero here (which is unusal) it has been so dry so once again we don't have snow.  However, we are bundling up to fight off the cold and it sure hasn't kept the kiddos from playin' outside!

With two little girls, ages three and one, we are only just beginning to create holiday traditions. Sometimes they are borne of necessity-- in this case, how to break out of a cranky day? Well, what could be better than getting all bundled up and heading out for some special Christmas mini-cupcakes? The local bakery makes the most adorable holiday themed cupcakes, and within minutes all three of us were in a much better mood. This is a tradition that will, no doubt, be repeated a few times this holiday season.

I am still having so much fun making Christmas cards with the Joyride collection.  It is just a tiny bit shabby, but super colorful.  I feel like it was made just for me.  :)

For my first card, I focused on the fun die-cut shaped paper.  It is actually from the Sweet Shoppe collection, but it works so well with the Joyride collection.  Then I just added some chipboard and journaling cuts, and I cut out a few peppermint shapes from the patterned paper to adorn the tree.

When I saw the images of the adorable little “snow kids” in the Joyride Collection it reminded me so much of this photo of my oldest son Darian dressed in a Santa suit and hat. Between the chubby cheeks and joyful smile my little boy looked just like Baby Santa – if only you could see his roly poly belly in the photo I’d have you totally convinced!  Hee hee!

When using the adorable chipboard sticker shapes from the Joyride Collection it’s fun to “dress them up” a bit by adding some glitter as I did here.

I had to laugh at this photo I caught of our daughter, preparing a snowball to throw at my husband...he was actually SURPRISED when she threw it his way after he gave her a quick lesson in making the perfect snowball, lol. (he did give her credit for her aim though) I used the cream colored alphabet stickers on top of the red for a bit of dimension...and threaded a few pink sequins through the twine for a fun twist. The 'caught in the act' phrase was typed over and over again on my old typewriter...I just backspaced and kept typing over the one in the middle so it would stand out a bit.

"Tree Guilt"

Since parts of our artificial Christmas tree went missing last year, we've returned to the live tree tradition.  Unfortunately, every time I look at our tree, I can't help but feel sad that this "live" tree will be anything but in a few weeks.  This page documents my resulting "tree guilt." Though it may seem a little on the gloomy side for this time of year, it's also a hopeful page for me, since I'm resolving to get a fake tree next year. Sure, artificial trees may not look or smell as amazing as live trees do, but at least my conscience won't bother me.  So, to mark the occasion, and to prove that fake and fabulous need not be mutually exclusive, I made my own happy little tree out of Collage Press Joyride papers. No tree guilt there!

I just adore the colors in this collection, how vibrant but yet with that vintage feel. The inspiration for this layout came from the die cut papers - especially this zig zig one (the red snowflake is another favorite and saving that one until I can find the perfect snowflake picture; unfortunately it doesn't snow over here in Singapore).  Another part of the inspiration was from the cute gift bows that I just got - they were actually meant for presents, but couldn't avoid adding a little something to the page.  And as I was making this layout... I kept reminding my other half that Christmas was fast approach and whether he has decided on what to get me...if not, well I got a long long long wish list.

“Christmas ‘Cheer’”

" Being With You"

Don't you just adore the Joyride Collection - the colors, the fun designs and of course the versatility of these papers.  My inspiration for this page came from the wordings on the adorable phase stickers "the best place on earth is with the one you love". Yes, for me that sums it all up and all I want for Christmas is to be with you.  This will be our second christmas together after two years apart, as we used to live on opposite ends of the world; but of course... I wouldn't mind a few presents too.

A Holiday Tree-dition

How lucky am I to be able to create with the absolutely adorable, gorgeous, fun and whimsical JOYRIDE collection!  I have been so excited about this collection since the first day I laid eyes on it... but you really must see it and fondle it in real life to appreciate the richness and beauty of the entire collection!  When I look at the papers, chipboard and stickers,  I am immediately taken back to my childhood.  There is something very nostalgic about this line to me... yet at the same time so much fun.  I started thinking about when I was young and all of the happy memories I have of the holidays.  It isn't the presents I received... nor the gifts that I gave that I remember... rather it's the little things, the traditions, the ornaments that we used every year, even going up the street with my Dad to cut our tree.  It is one thing I want so much for my children to have when they get older... memories of good times, of family times, of traditions that we have as we celebrate the season.

Of course one of my favorite, must do activities every Christmas, is cutting down our Christmas tree fresh from a tree farm.  I admit,  it started out as a quest to find the perfect tree to bring into our home - but it has become so much more now.  We have been going to the same tree farm now for many years and the day itself is filled with traditions that I hope will become some of my children's best memories.  The car ride game of guessing how many trees we will see tied to the top of vehicles ... the addition of a nutcracker for their own collection from the cute little barn store... having hot chocolate and hotdogs while waiting for them to bundle up our tree to take home... and of course the tradition of walking for miles and miles in search of the perfect tree all the while having snow ball fights and playing in the snow  - when we all know that the first tree was "the one" - but that would end the day to soon!

I often joke with my children that my wish is to do this together every year, with the addition of wives and grandchildren, and of course the cutting of more than one tree.  For now they swear that it will always be something we do... but Im sure their future wives will have something to say about the in-laws tagging along LOL!! For now I am just savoring each and every year we are able to carry this on.

I decided to document how I feel with a layout using the JOYRIDE collection - and I am so happy with the end result. The new chipboard included in the Joyride line is INCREDIBLE!!!  I love that the adhesive is already on the back, and it is so thick and sturdy, absolutely scrumptious!  I used the larger title piece "Enjoy time together now" because this truly is one day when every thing is put aside to enjoy this special day that we spend together as a family.

Here is my layout and some close up shots for you all -

For those of you who know me, know that I absolutely love how colors "pop" with a white background, but with this line it just was to stark and fresh with the cream so I used some of my spray mists to "grunge" it up and tone down the brightness while still leaving a hint of the fresh, crisp feeling. I distressed the edges of the paper and very gently distressed the chipboard as well by peeling it back off of the base on the edges - it was so simple to do and I love how it changes the entire look of the pieces.  Give it a try yourself...Im sure you will love it as much as I do.

When I saw the diagonal stripe on the Joyride Wonderland paper I immediately thought of these photos of my daughter wearing this hat in the snow storm we had last Christmas. I'm pretty sure that they were meant for each other!

   I wanted to give the "swirly stripes" more dimension and thought that curling them on the ends would be the perfect finishing touch, at the same time giving a glimpse of the backsides.
